Denise Lambrechts Contributing Editor: Pharmacy
Denise completed her Diploma in Pharmacy in 1981. She has worked in
hospital, retail and distribution since then. She has been employed by UTI Pharma (previously known as I.H.D) since 1995 and currently she holds
the position of Regional Quality Assurance Pharmacist Manager.
Her interests include writing and maintaining of Standard Operating
Procedures, Training and Auditing.

Gender issues are thus central to the ethics of assisted reproduction. The social imperative to reproduce may have important implications for informed consent.

Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT)
At the end of 2000, a decision was taken by the government of South Africa to implement a pilot programme for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. This resulted in two pilot sites being selected per province for the implementation of a PMTCT protocol developed by the national DoH. The pilot programme was largely funded by national conditional grants to each province.

The effect of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation on pregnancy outcomes and foetal growth
Two long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid) are important to fetal and infant growth and development. In the cerebral cortex and retina, DHA constitutes a large percentage of the phospholipid fatty acids; AA, which is also essential for normal growth and development, is the precursor of eicosanoids.

4th SA AIDS Conference
31 March – 3 April 2009
The theme this year: ‘Scaling up for success’ recognises that there is an urgency to take stock of best practices in treatment and prevention and to scale these up sufficiently to begin to roll back the onslaught in numbers and impact that the epidemic is currently waging in Southern Africa. More than ever before we need to come together as a region, declare war on the epidemic and begin to see the rates in Southern Africa decline.

South African Society of Physiotherapy International Congress 2009

The theme of the congress is “The Full Circle: educate and exercise.” This signifies how results from recent research has shown that physiotherapy has indeed come the full circle from treatment to prevention. One of the most important strategies physiotherapists can follow to facilitate prevention is to empower their clients to take control of their own health and wellness with exercises and education.
