Riana Pienaar Contributing Editor: Dietetics
Riana completed her B Dietetics Degree in 1993, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Hospital dietetics in 1994,
both at the University of Pretoria. In 2000 she completed a BSc Honours Degree in Psychology at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Currently she has completed three of the four modules of the Masters Degree in Nutrition at the University of Stellenbosch,
namely Nutritional Assessment, Research Methodology, Epidemiology and Nutritional Surveillance, and Therapeutic Nutrition.
Since 2003 she has been a self employed private practicing Dietitian with special interests including Diabetes Mellitus,
Insulin resistance, Sport nutrition, Eating disorders and Digestive disorders.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Riana Pienaar for her continuing contribution to the success of eCPD.

Epidemiology of paediatric metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus
The epidemic in childhood obesity is a driving force behind the increase in paediatric metabolic syndrome,
a collection of abnormalities that is associated in adults with increased risk for cardiovascular disease and
type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although there is no clear consensus about the paediatric definition for metabolic syndrome,
the prevalence of this syndrome is clearly rising.

The 8th Annual Congress of Midwives of South Africa

South Africa is faced with the challenge of increasing numbers of women who die needlessly due to pregnancy and child birth. In order to reduce maternal and child mortality and morbidity, the 8th Annual Midwifery Congress seeks to focus on strategies to introduce and/or improve in midwifery practice that will ensure improved maternal and child outcomes.

The First South African Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation Course

The outcome of the course is to render the candidates competent in Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation Therapy (VART). Audiologists who pass the assessments will be recognized by the Health Professions Council of South Africa as being eligible to work in the field of VART.
